Workplace Personal Safety “An Employee’s Right to partake in their everyday work life free from psychological abuse or harm in the workplace”.    Judith Carmody 2025

Psychological abuse, harassment and violence at work: are you at risk?

My research TUS, Ireland - workplace survey 2024 shows the following:

Q. Risk Assessment : Did your organisation conduct a Risk Assessment and assess if the investigation of bullying exacerbated a mental health injury?

119 Respondents : 63% said No - 37% said “They didn’t know”

Q. Have you personally experienced or witnessed workplace bullying?

119 Respondents: 63% experienced bullying, 39% witnessed bullying and 8% never experienced bullying.

Assessing the risks and recognising the signs of danger must be a priority and a responsibility of every employee.  Make a conscious inspection of your workplace surroundings at all times. We have heard too many heart breaking stories where loyal, talented employees become the targets of workplace abuse and have had their careers, wellbeing and health destroyed. When they reported the abuse to the so called “authorities” they were re abused, re traumatised and invalidated. Your safety plan must include a continuous assessment of your workplace situations and it must prioritise your safety, health and wellbeing. Assessing your environment, knowing the risks, identify possible threats earlier and plan to avoid risks of entrapment. Risk assessment must become a daily exercise as the dynamics continuously change in the workplace. E.g. a new employee, new boss or change of practice. Include in your plan a daily overview of your workplace safety. Your personal assessments should complement the employer’s risk assessment (if any).

Personal safety at work:  Who is responsible for your personal safety at work? How does this relate to me? Reporting, Prevention Intervention and Resolve. Do you have a workplace personal safety strategy?

·       Can you recognise the Red Flags of a predator/perpetrator of psychological abusive behaviour?

·       Can you recognise a toxic workplace before it destroys your health, wellbeing and career?

·       How can you recognise when somebody is sabotaging your career?

·       If you become the target of workplace bullying, mobbing or inappropriate behaviour, what do you do?

Who is responsible for personal safety at work? How does this relate to me?

Knowing the risks at work and having a comprehensive personal safety strategy means thinking about what could happen and then about how to address it, resolve it and end it.

Planning will protect your safety, career, health and wellbeing.  Contact me if you need support with your Personal Workplace Safety Plan.

Wishing you a prosperous and safe career 2025.
